How is the 6” retrieve going thus far?

I will upload the Lesson 4 EXAM today for all of you. You’ve had an extra week so expect you to be working your dogs in HIGH distraction levels at this point. You should be working your dog in new and unexpected locations also. Yes, you’ll have to do these on the ground.

Examples

1) Go find a dog park and remain outside the fence, in an unobtrusive location, and work the 6” retrieves towards the park.

2) Go find a soccer field, football field, etc., that is being used, and in an unobtrusive location (I often do these retrieves between parked cars) and work the 6” retrieves.

3) Put paper plates, bowls, etc., in a semi-circle around the area just like you did for your Week 5 Sit/Stay homework photo, and work the 6” retrieve into the semi-circle of tempting distractions.

Think..make your HIGH distractions the toughest you can come up with right now. Why? Because your have control of your dogs head at a short range. That changes in Lesson 5 when we go to the 12” retrieve.

NOW is the time to work the hardest distraction training ever so your dog WILL BELIEVE YOU that “Fetch” means fetch on command now.  You are working to instill in your dogs mind that ‘You say what you mean and mean what you say.’ This is a critical moment in the retrieve training process.

Make the training tough this week and it gets easier.

Make the training medium this week and it gets harder.

You have the choice.
